BIOGRAPHY
Joni Brenner is a visual artist based in Johannesburg. She has a BA(FA) and an MA(FA) degree from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). She has been practising professionally as an artist since 1996 and has held solo exhibitions in Johannesburg and London. Brenner works primarily in the field of portraiture in a range of different mediums. Her work is, in David Bunn’s words, ‘a visual quarrel’ with the tradition rather than any affirmation of its established conventions.
Brenner is Principal Tutor in History of Art at the Wits School of Arts, where she has taught since 1999. She is an honorary member of the Marigold beadwork co-operative in Bulawayo Zimbabwe, and a contributing designer to the silversmith workshop, One-Eleven Plumtree, also in Bulawayo.
