OFF THE WALL

This title of this 1999 exhibition reflects an early interest in the relationship between painting and sculpture; my paintings already were acquiring a dimensionality that pushed them into the realm of the sculptural, both in terms of the impasto paint, and through the display mechanisms I was experimenting with. My sculptures, on the other hand, were still attached to the wall, and were mostly relief sculptures. Made in clay and plaster, and by using my hands and elbows to push, pull and mold malleable clay slabs into being, they were distinctly painterly in style.
